On Feb. 1, Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced during Budget 2018 that customs duty will be increased by a margin 15 to 20 percent on the import of smartphones and TVs. Last December Apple had increased prices when the customs duty was hiked from 10 to 15 percent. Now again the market will see a price hike on Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The rise in iPhone prices was expected as the Union Budget for 2018-2019 hiked the import duty on mobile phones from 15 percent to 20 percent.
In this whole scenario, iPhone SE models remain unchanged at Rs 26,000 for 32GB variant and Rs 35,000 for the 128GB version, because Apple assembles the iPhone SE model through contract manufacturer Wistron in Bengaluru, but that’s the only model being made locally.
